I feel sorry for the people in Bible times. The Jewish Torah, written by Moses, contains 613 commandments. Take your time, let that sink in.
How on earth were these people expected to follow, let alone remember, all these commandments? God knew that it was extremely difficult to do this, and no one would ever be able to follow God's laws perfectly. And even those who actually did a pretty good job of keeping the laws tended to be stuck-up legalists who looked down on everyone else.
It was impossible for us to be perfect ourselves, which is why Jesus was sent down for us.
