Bible Refresher 42 - Best High Priest Ever

In the Old Testament times, the people relied on the High Priest to intercede for them. Every morning and evening a lamb sacrifice was made for everyone, and it remained this way for centuries, until Jesus' death.

"Then, behold, the veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom; and the earth quaked, and the rocks were split..." (Matthew 27:51 NKJV)

This happened right when Jesus had died (the fact that the curtain in the temple split from top to bottom acted as proof that it was not an act of vandalism). This was meant to serva as a sign that Jesus had paid the ultimate price, and lamb sacrifices were no longer necessary.

Jesus now is in Heaven, serving as our new High Priest to all those on the earth.

"Seeing then that we have a great High Priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. For we do not have a High Priest who cannot sympathize with out weaknesses, but was in all points tempted as we are, yet without sin. Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need." (Hebrews 4:14-16 NKJV)

He is the one who intercedes for us now. He listens to us and prays to God on our behalf. Pretty cool, huh? ^^

What I think some people don't realize, though, is that Jesus is the only one who intercedes for us. Nobody, dead or alive, could or ever will be able to intercede to God for us. It is only Jesus who can do that.

"For there is one God and one Mediator between God and men, the Man is Christ Jesus..." (1 Timothy 2:5 NKJV)
